In 2012 I travelled over 5,000 across America from North Carolina to Washington State, or from the Atlantic to the Pacific, but unlike Buster Keaton I drove all the way and took in friends in Madison and Washington.
This year I drove from my home to Eastern Europe taking a brilliant and lovely young artist along on a 3,000 mile trip. Packing the miles into a few weeks is a new way of travelling that collapses the time but also, can be quite lonely. With someone one can open up a little as I tend to be introverted, that said we still spent time when it was just the two of us tramping up a wet mountain or camping in the wilds with bears in the first (and yes I saw a baby bear so this is true.)
Motorised travel though, is not as interesting as being out walking. You can increase the countries you visit in a set amount of time, but the whole idea that you only have a a certain amount of time, is the problem that defeats travelling. Travelling is about spending time, and we should run our lives so we can all spend a lot of it seeing the world without having to get back or carry a watch.
