Read accounts – where they are to be read – in the drawings and writings of the past and you will find the stories of the great disasters. The volcano, earthquake and storm activity of the planet has fed deeply into the psyche of the human race, so much so it is the staple diet of the movie scene.
Apocalypses though do not have to be fire and brimstone events. Every individual life lost is a personal apocalypse never to be seen again and the slow burn of extinction which may take hundreds of years, is its own apocalypse. The Armenian genocide, the native American genocide, the Cambodian genocide, the Jewish genocide – all apocalypses of their own that left the rest of the world untouched.
The imagination of ten thousand years ago which had no science that we know about, still runs the expectations in our stories. Monsters and fire, hell and invasion. with a joke in between just to keep one’s spirits up – until the spirits start haunting us.
